Science, Trade, and Industry
Leipzig owes its excellent reputation as a city of science to the main university, founded in 1409, as well as to the other technical, economic, and artistic universities. It is also home to a number of innovative research facilities, such as the Centre for Environmental Research and the Max-Planck institutes.
With a population of over 500,000, Leipzig is the most important centre for trade and exhibitions in central Germany. Every year, thousands of people come to visit the book fair and the automobile exhibition. Local firms such as Porsche, BMW, Amazon and DHL prove Leipzig to be an attractive location for renowned businesses. Home to the Central German broadcasting company MDR and many publishing houses, Leipzig is also an important media centre.
